Crowns

What Are Crowns?

Crowns are dental restorations that resemble natural teeth. They are typically used to repair breaks and protect against future infection. They can also be attached to dental implants in order to replace missing teeth.

We use durable, natural-looking dental crowns that can withstand years of normal chewing, speaking, brushing, and flossing. At the end of dental crown treatment with our dentists, you’ll have a completely functional bite and an attractive smile.

Crowns in Action

To protect a damaged tooth with a crown, Dr. Kinder and Dr. Whitaker must first reshape the tooth. Then, they can attach a custom-designed crown made out of porcelain, zirconia, or IPS e.max.

Do You Need a Dental Crown?

If you have a damaged, decayed, or painful tooth, a dental crown can be used to protect it and prevent the need for extraction.

Painful Tooth

If you have a tooth that is consistently causing you pain, you may have a dental infection. We can perform a root canal to remove infected material. Then, we can cap the tooth with a crown, preventing the need for extraction.

Broken Tooth

A chipped or broken tooth can impair your dental function and make you feel self-conscious about smiling. Our dentists can place a crown over your broken tooth, restoring your ability to chew and the appearance of your smile.

Unsightly Tooth

Some teeth are too discolored for teeth whitening or too significantly damaged for porcelain veneers. The crowns we use look just like natural teeth, so we can use them to give your smile a major cosmetic upgrade.

Missing Tooth

Traditional dentures are prone to slipping out of place, while traditional bridges don’t provide the necessary support to your jawbone. A crown attached to a dental implant is the best solution for a missing tooth.

Dental Crown Timeline

1

Dental Exam

During your initial appointment at our office in Knoxville, TN, Dr. Kinder and Dr. Whitaker will examine your affected tooth to determine if you require a dental crown. If they discover your tooth is infected, they may recommend root canal therapy before any other treatment.

2

Tooth Preparation

Our dentists will administer a local anesthetic and then precisely remove any decay from the tooth. They will then remove a small amount of enamel so that the permanent crown will fit snugly over the tooth. At the end of this process, they will take impressions of your bite, which our partner lab will reference when designing your final restoration.

3

Temporary Crown

After Dr. Kinder and Dr. Whitaker have taken impressions, they will place a temporary crown over your modified tooth. You will need to wear the temporary crown for two to three weeks while the technicians at the lab fabricate and hand-finish your permanent crown out of porcelain, zirconia, or IPS e.max.

4

Permanent Crown

After two to three weeks of wearing the temporary crown, you will return to our Knoxville office to receive your permanent crown. Our dentists will secure the crown over the tooth with dental cement. You can now return to chewing, speaking, and smiling with ease and confidence.

Crowns and Root Canals

Many patients are intimidated by the idea of root canal therapy, but in the hands of our experienced dentists, root canal treatment is quick and gentle. The purpose of root canal therapy is to remove infected material from the interior of a tooth. Root canal procedures are always concluded with the placement of dental crowns.

If you suspect you have a dental infection, you should contact our office as soon as possible. If left untreated, the infection can spread to other parts of your body and cause serious health issues. Get in touch with us today so we can save your tooth and provide you with a state-of-the-art dental crown.

Crowns and Dental Implants

Dental implants are the premier tooth replacement solution in modern dentistry because they replace the roots of missing teeth. Implants fuse directly with the jawbone, so crowns attached to implants will not slip or slide like traditional dentures do. Also, because implants integrate with the jawbone, they prevent the bone atrophy that accompanies tooth loss.

Dr. Kinder and Dr. Whitaker have the skills and expertise to handle every stage of implant treatment themselves. They will not have to refer you to other specialists. If you have a missing tooth, contact our office today to get started on your journey towards a complete smile.
